Our vision
Fletcher Building's injury rate reduction
Company-wide, we recognise the challenges we face going forward. Since 2006 we have made significant progress with our injury rates halving in three years, but challenges remain.
In safety-critical areas, we are moving towards more consistent standards across the group. The Health and Safety Council has adopted a list of safety critical issues for which “Fatal Risk Guidelines” have been developed. These guidelines continue to be built on to integrate new information and learnings.
Fletcher Building also recognises the importance of leadership to support change to culture and behaviours. In 2007, we introduced our inaugural Safety Awards. This annual competition is designed to recognise high levels of commitment and reward effective safety initiatives.
In 2008, we initiated Pulse, a company-wide health and safety conference senior managers, facilitated by Executives that runs every two years.

The Fletcher Building Health, Safety & Sustainability Awards were introduced in 2007 to recognise outstanding health and safety initiatives and successes. We believe that one of the best ways to raise health and safety standards is to recognise and reward those who lead the field and encourage others to follow their example. The increased quality of the submissions raises the standard of the Awards each year. By positively reinforcing the role of safety and sustainability in the workplace, the Awards help our people to see safety and sustainability as something to be achieved. 2011 WinnersBusiness unit awards Individual achievements |

The first Pulse Health and Safety Forum was held in 2008, bringing together 160 Fletcher Building senior managers and health and safety practitioners from around the world. Fletcher chief executive Jonathan Ling and each divisional chief executive ran particular sections of the conference and complementary workshops allowed health and safety issues specific to the industry to be discussed. In October 2010, around 180 senior managers from the wider Fletcher group attended the second Pulse conference at Eden Park, which focussed on the human factors of health and safety using a range of keynote speakers, workshops and discussions. In 2009, to maintain the momentum that Pulse had created the year before, a DVD and safety message was produced by the company and distributed to a large number of our employees. Pulse: The Ripple Effect contained messages that resonated with employees on a personal level, while supporting the developing Fletcher Building health and safety culture. The DVD was launched to 14,500 English-speaking employees worldwide in March 2010 and has had a profound impact on those that have viewed it. Pulse: The Ripple Effect was also a finalist in the 2010 Safeguard New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards. We would like to sincerely thank all those who participated in the making of this video, especially the Dick family.
