Sustainability

As Australasia’s largest building materials manufacturer and supplier, we take our responsibility to society, the industries we are a part of, our staff and the environment extremely seriously.

Our commitment to sustainable practices is shared across all of our businesses, and forms a key part of their individual and our group annual strategic directions.

Our values, beliefs and operating practices - together called the “Fletcher Building Way” - are shaped by a heritage of constructive, enduring relationships within Fletcher Building, and with our shareholders, customers and communities. All Fletcher Building employees and contractors must know, and strive to meet, the behavioural standards expressed in the Fletcher Building Way.

Learn MoreEnvironment

We are making significant progress in minimising our impact on the natural environment. An example of this is the considerable progress we have made in reducing our CO2 emissions. Absolute CO2 emissions across the group decreased by 16 percent between 2007 and Dec 31, 2012, while our emissions intensity - a more accurate measurement of improvement as it takes decreased production into account - improved by 5.1%. Our goal now is a further 10 percent reduction in CO2 emissions between 2012 and 2020.

While maintaining a firm focus on the credentials of our own products, operations, services and suppliers, we are also looking beyond reducing our own impact to play a broader industry role. Our goal is to inspire the entire building and infrastructure sector toward sustainability, and to work with others to find effective sustainable solutions.

Learn MoreHealth and safety

Based on the belief that all accidents are preventable, we have a long-term goal of eliminating all workplace-accidents across the company. Our aim is zero harm.

Our group health and safety strategy has two core areas of focus; managing operational safety risks to reduce the risk of serious injuries or fatalities, and engaging with our workforce through programmes which enhance their physical wellbeing and productivity.

Through effective governance, safety management and risk assessment, we are focused on enhancing our culture of health and safety, and making all of our workplaces safer places to be.

Learn MorePeople

Fletcher Building employs approximately 19,200 people, across 50 business units and more than 40 countries. Those businesses currently operate in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the South Pacific.

Our people are the drivers behind our success. Through group initiatives we aim to increase and maintain job satisfaction among employees, while providing clear paths for career advancement. We seek to attract and retain the best workforce by providing inclusive, engaging workplaces in which all talented people can make the most of their potential and deliver great results.

Learn MoreCommunity

Having operations across the world means our businesses work in a diverse range of communities and environments. We recognise the range of obligations we have to those communities, and to the people who are a part of them. Our heritage of constructive, enduring relationships with these groups has shaped the company’s values, beliefs and operating practices.

We proudly support key community initiatives, as do our businesses. Our contribution to Christchurch, New Zealand, as it recovers from two years of earthquakes and aftershocks, is an example of the commitment we have to our communities.

Learn MoreGovernance and standards

Maintaining the highest level of governance is paramount to the success of our business. Our governance policies and procedures are centred on the eight principles recognised by the ASX Corporate Governance Council, in its report of August 2007.

In addition, we have also considered practices and trends in corporate governance in other jurisdictions and have incorporated these where appropriate.
